Washer Repair Requests

Requests cover front-load and top-load washers that won’t fill, drain, spin or start, along with leaks, error codes and heavy shaking.

Request washer repair

Washing machines combine water valves, a drain pump, a motor and a door or lid lock, so one failed part can stop an entire cycle. Typical requests involve soaked clothes left in the drum, error codes, loud banging during spin or water seeping onto the laundry room floor.

Tell us whether you have a front-load or top-load machine and what it is doing. We pass the request to independent local repair professionals, who may contact you, diagnose the washer and provide their own estimate. You decide whether to move forward with any repair.

Signs Your Washer May Need a Professional

  • Clothes come out dripping because the water didn’t drain
  • A code or flashing light appears on the control panel
  • Violent shaking or banging during the spin cycle
  • Water on the floor near the door or underneath

Common Washer Problems

Washer won’t drain

Standing water is often caused by a clog in the drain pump filter, a sock caught in the hose or a drain pump that has failed. A technician may also check whether the drain hose is kinked or installed too high for the pump to push water out.

Won’t spin or agitate

Spin problems can come from an unbalanced load, a lid switch or door lock that isn’t registering as closed, a worn drive belt or a faulty motor coupling. On newer models, a control board or motor control unit may also be involved.

Leaking water

Front-load leaks often trace to a torn door boot seal or a loose pump connection. Top-load leaks may come from worn fill hoses, an overflowing tub or a cracked part. Using too much detergent can also create excess suds that escape.

Loud noise or shaking

Heavy vibration is frequently caused by an uneven floor, unlevel feet or worn suspension springs and dampers. Grinding or roaring during spin may point to tub bearings that are wearing out, which a technician can assess.

Won’t fill or start

A machine that won’t fill may have closed supply taps, clogged inlet screens or a failed water inlet valve. If nothing happens when you press start, the door lock, lid switch, control board or a tripped breaker can be the cause.

Safe Things to Check First

  • Write down any error code exactly as it appears
  • Confirm both the hot and cold water taps behind the washer are fully open
  • Rearrange the load and check that the machine sits level on the floor
  • Make sure the drain hose isn’t pinched behind the machine

What to Include in Your Request

  • Brand, model and serial number, often found inside the door rim on front-loaders or under the lid or on the back panel of top-loaders
  • Whether it is a front-load or top-load machine
  • The error code, if any, and the point in the cycle where it stops
  • Whether water is still sitting in the drum

Washer Repair FAQs

Is it normal for a front-load washer to smell musty?

Odors are common in front-loaders when moisture stays trapped in the door seal and drain area. Leaving the door open between loads and running a cleaning cycle can help. A persistent smell paired with slow draining may suggest a clog worth having inspected.

Should I repair or replace my washing machine?

Consider the machine’s age, how often it has needed repairs and which part is involved. A failed pump or door lock is a different situation than a worn drum bearing. Ask the repair professional for a clear explanation and quote to help you decide.

What if my washer is still under warranty?

Reach out to the manufacturer or warranty provider first, because outside repairs may affect what is covered. If your coverage has ended or the problem is excluded, you can submit a request and independent local repair professionals may follow up.
