Dishwasher Repair Requests
Requests cover built-in and portable dishwashers that won’t drain, leave dishes dirty, leak onto the floor, or won’t start or finish a cycle.
Dishwashers are tied into both your plumbing and electrical systems, which is why issues often appear as a pool of dirty water in the tub, cloudy or gritty glasses, a wet floor or a cycle that quits partway through. Food debris and hard water play a role in many of these problems.
Once you send a request, we route it to independent local repair professionals. One may reach out, diagnose the dishwasher in person and quote their own price. Nothing is repaired unless you choose to go ahead.
Signs Your Dishwasher May Need a Professional
- Dirty water left in the bottom after a cycle
- Dishes come out spotty, gritty or still soiled
- A puddle forming in front of the door
- The cycle won’t start or stops before it finishes
Common Dishwasher Problems
Not draining
Standing water is often caused by a clogged filter, a blocked drain hose or a drain connection at the garbage disposal that is plugged. A technician may also test the drain pump and check for a failed check valve.
Dishes not getting clean
Poor results can be caused by clogged spray arm holes, a dirty filter, low water temperature or a weak circulation pump. Hard water buildup and overloading the racks can also prevent water from reaching every item.
Leaking onto the floor
Leaks often come from a worn door gasket, a cracked spray arm, loose hose connections under the tub or using the wrong detergent, which can create excess suds. A failed water inlet valve may also let water drip when the machine is idle.
Won’t start or finish
A dishwasher that won’t start may have a door latch that isn’t engaging, a child lock turned on or a control board issue. Cycles that stop early can relate to a faulty heating element, thermostat or float switch.
Safe Things to Check First
- Take out and rinse the filter at the bottom of the tub, following your manual
- Spin the spray arms by hand to make sure nothing blocks them
- Make sure the control lock or child lock isn’t turned on
- Run the kitchen faucet until the water is hot before starting a load
What to Include in Your Request
- Brand, model and serial number, often printed on a label along the edge of the door or inside the tub opening
- Whether it is built in or portable
- Any error code or blinking light and the point in the cycle where it happens
- Whether you recently had the garbage disposal installed or serviced
Dishwasher Repair FAQs
Why is there water in the bottom of my dishwasher?
A small amount of water near the filter is normal in many models. More than that after a finished cycle usually points to a drain issue, such as a clogged filter, kinked hose or blocked disposal connection. Mention how much water remains in your request.
Should I repair or replace my dishwasher?
Consider the age of the dishwasher, the condition of the tub and racks and which part has failed. A drain pump or latch is different from a rusted tub. A repair professional can explain the diagnosis and quote a price so you can decide.
What if my dishwasher is still under warranty?
Check with the manufacturer or warranty company before arranging outside repairs, as that could affect your coverage. If your warranty doesn’t apply, you can submit a request and independent local repair professionals may contact you.
