Range Hood Repair Requests
Requests cover wall-mount, under-cabinet and island range hoods with weak suction, noisy fans, or lights and fan controls that don’t work.
A range hood pulls smoke, steam and grease away from the cooking surface using a fan, filters and either a duct to the outside or a recirculating filter. Weak suction, a loud or rattling fan and lights or speed buttons that stop working are typical reasons people ask for help.
Send a request describing your hood and the problem. We share it with independent local repair professionals, who may contact you, look at the fan, controls and venting, and quote their own price for any repair you approve.
Signs Your Range Hood May Need a Professional
- Smoke and cooking odors linger instead of clearing
- Rattling, humming or louder fan noise than before
- Lights or certain fan speeds don’t work
- Grease dripping from the filters or hood edge
Common Range Hood Problems
Weak suction
Weak airflow is often caused by grease-clogged filters, a damper stuck closed in the duct or a duct run that is crushed or too long. A technician may also check whether the fan motor or blower wheel is slowing down.
Noisy fan
Rattling can come from a loose filter, a damper flapping in the duct or a blower wheel that has collected grease and become unbalanced. Humming or grinding may point to worn motor bearings.
Lights or fan not working
Lights that won’t turn on may simply need new bulbs, but a failed switch, control board or loose connection can also be the cause. If the fan doesn’t run on any speed, the motor, capacitor or control may need testing.
Grease dripping
Dripping usually means the filters are overloaded with grease or the grease collection channel is full. In ducted hoods, condensation and grease in the duct can also run back toward the hood over time.
Safe Things to Check First
- Remove and clean the metal grease filters, or replace charcoal filters on recirculating hoods
- Replace any burned-out bulbs with the type listed in your manual
- Check the breaker that powers the hood
- Feel for airflow at the exterior vent cap when the fan is on high
Safety: Turn off power to the hood at the breaker before removing filters if the fan or lights behave erratically. Built-up grease is flammable, so keep filters clean.
What to Include in Your Request
- Brand, model and serial number, often found on a label inside the hood behind the grease filters
- Whether the hood is ducted outside or recirculating
- The mounting style: under-cabinet, wall-mount, island or insert
- Which functions are affected, such as certain fan speeds or lights
Range Hood Repair FAQs
How often should range hood filters be cleaned?
Many manufacturers suggest cleaning metal mesh filters about once a month with regular cooking, and replacing charcoal filters every few months. Check your owner’s manual for the schedule that fits your model.
Why does my range hood still smell after cooking?
Recirculating hoods depend on charcoal filters, which lose effectiveness over time. Ducted hoods may leave odors behind if the duct is blocked or the fan is too weak for the cooktop. Mention the hood type in your request.
Can a range hood fan motor be replaced?
On many models the fan motor or blower assembly is a replaceable part. Availability depends on the brand and model, so include the details from the label inside the hood when you submit a request.
